Tisserin Engineers were appointed to design this single storey dome-like timber structure for a new nursery in south London.

The Brief

Sitting within a largely residential area with protected trees on the modest site, the client wanted to improve the nursery provision for the local community.

The Design

Tisserin enjoyed the challenging geometry presented by the site and designed the sloping timber frame and exposed connections for a specialist timber frame contractor to deliver on site. The nursery is partially buried into the existing landscape, cleverly making use of a very tight site overlooked by residential properties, featuring glazed facades at the front and rear of the new building and a grass covered roof.

The proposal was seen as contentious by the neighbours but was approved at planning appeal due to local resistance. It is due for completion on site in 2023.
