Honor Oak Rise

"Tisserin have supported us from day one to completion, helping guide the early concept through to completion on site. They were invaluable in delivering our project – a new home with an internally exposed CLT frame, on a highly constrained site - where the structure is an integral part of the architecture. Clear communicators, innovative thinkers, passionate about sustainable design - Tisserin are equally capable with the bigger picture and the finer details - we look forward to working with them in the future."

Tisserin’s timber detailing expertise informed the design and refinement of the exposed CLT structure, where precision and attention to detail were essential.

Designing a new four-storey home, Tisserin worked closely with architect Chris Wong to create a home for his growing family, using a collaborative process to coordinate the different structural materials.

A focal point is the exposed CLT cantilever staircase, a contemporary interpretation of a traditional stone stair. Each tread slots into a preformed pocket in the CLT wall to limit twisting and is supported by the tread below. The junctions required complex detailing so that all fixings are concealed. At the upper flight, a series of 40x40 balusters help suspend the stair.

Although the detailing is intricate, it is intentionally expressed as simple. The CLT walls act as deep beams, avoiding additional downstand beams at the rear. The CLT joints were carefully set out to produce clean, well-organised panels.

Tisserin's advanced timber engineering experience added significant value, helping deliver a carefully detailed home where the structure remains exposed for the owners to enjoy.
