At Melbury Gardens in Wimbledon, we delivered a contemporary extension and loft conversion that transforms the way this family home connects with light, space, and its garden. The centrepiece of the project is a sculptural timber diagrid roof — a carefully engineered structure that allows natural light to flood the new living space while framing an everchanging view of the sky.

The owners sought to replace a leaking conservatory, open up the ground floor, and create new usable space in the loft. Working within a tight budget, we collaborated closely with the project architects to develop a roof system made from deep, angled timber fins. The result is both delicate and robust, supporting the glazing above while creating a striking architectural statement.

Drawing on our expertise in complex timber structures, we detailed every element of the form and its connections, ensuring seamless integration from design through fabrication. Early adoption of our 3D digital model enabled efficient coordination and contributed to the project being delivered well below the typical cost of similar builds.

The loft conversion was engineered without expensive cranked steel beams, instead using the inherent strength of the existing building geometry — providing a cost effective, beautifully resolved new space for the family.
